In 1943, the airport was named after Lt. General Edward Lawrence Logan, a Spanish-American war hero from South Boston. Today, the airport has six runways and handles more than 30 million passengers annually. AECOM has a long history with the airport, having provided services, including the Terminal B Renovation on behalf of United Airlines and a state-of-the-art fueling system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Terminal B Renovation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>United Airlines was determined to give their customers a superior travel experience at Boston\u2019s Logan International Airport following a merger with Continental Airlines, one of the nation\u2019s largest commercial airline companies.<\/p>\n<p>Through a partnership with the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport), United Airlines consolidated operations by upgrading Terminal B. The new, 200,000 square-foot section accommodates facilities and amenities for existing customers and those acquired from Continental Airlines \u2014 prior to the merger, both airlines were located in separate terminals.<\/p>\n<p>As lead designer for this US$160-million project, AECOM provided architectural, interior and structural design, project controls and resident inspection services to create a comfortable and relaxed ambiance for customers and self-service technologies that streamline the usually hectic traveling process, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>10 modified gates;<\/li>\n<li>Improved passenger security checkpoint and ticketing areas;<\/li>\n<li>A state-of-the-art baggage handling system;<\/li>\n<li>Self-tagging baggage kiosks;<\/li>\n<li>Automated self-boarding gates;<\/li>\n<li>Customer service center allowing employees on site to help passengers requiring assistance;<\/li>\n<li>Electronic charging stations in every chair in the departure lounge;<\/li>\n<li>And flight information displays in boarding areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Opened to the public in April 2014, Terminal B offers a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere dedicated to enriching the experience of flying with United Airlines.<\/p>\n<p>Awards<\/p>\n<p>Award of Merit, Airport\/Transit and Safety, ENR New England, 2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Airport Fueling System<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Massport\u2019s ambitious goal of providing a state-of-the-art fueling system for Logan International Airport was realized when the $63 million project was brought on line.
