AECOM performed a comprehensive thermal modelling exercise at SCK-CEN, one of the first nuclear research centres in Europe.
Our experts conducted the work for NIRAS, the Belgian agency responsible for the treatment and disposal of domestic radioactive waste. The objective was to assess if it was safe to enter the centre’s underground galleries should they show deficiencies.
The AECOM team developed a 2D and 3D thermal model at the US Department of Energy’s Savannah River National Laboratory. The state-of-the-art facilities enabled us to simulate the future thermal impact on radioactive waste in the galleries. The modelling showed whether personnel could access the site according to a number of different scenarios.
The results of the successful exercise allowed NIRAS to continue developing its radioactive waste management activities safely.
