The York Regional Police (YRP) required a new facility to train more officers and civilians every year, uphold modern training standards and achieve sustainability goals. AECOM worked with YRP in the programming and design of this new 85,000-square-foot facility. It contains specialized training venues that include an 18-position dynamic training firing range, police vehicle operations (PVO) simulators, use of force simulations room, repelling tower and a defensive tactics room. Complementing those areas are a variety of classrooms, meeting rooms and multi-purpose training rooms along with fitness and locker rooms. The facility accommodates 250 students and 60 teaching staff.

The 11-acre site consists of north and south areas which AECOM revised for an optimized layout. The north side was expanded to improve access to the training building and associated parking, allowing for the south side to be allocated for the future development of outdoor training venues, such as a drivers skid pad. Site modifications also provided for future expansion of the firing range and more classrooms, as well as the potential addition of a warehouse.

In addition to leading the architecture and engineering design for this project, AECOM provided cost estimating, planning and scheduling, construction staging, commissioning, LEED/sustainability, building code/life safety, and tender and construction support services. The architecture design was completed in association with Parkin Architects. The new facility is LEED Silver certified.
