A comprehensive and unique understanding of the project’s complexities allowed AECOM Arcadis JV to respond to design constraints, technical issues, and time restraints collaboratively and effectively, with innovative solutions employed to ensure project milestones were met.

By developing a design framework and responding to context and constraints, we achieved a consistent design language along the new transport gateway corridor which will reconnect fragmented open spaces and public amenities by improving connectivity and permeability.

The NSW Government is delivering the $2.6B Sydney Gateway, a new high-capacity toll-free road that will expand and improve the road and freight rail network in and around Sydney Airport and Port Botany.

The development of this project will strengthen Sydney’s position as a global city by expanding and improving the existing road networks through improved traffic flow, reduced travel times, eased congestion and returning local streets to the community.

Achievements

AECOM Arcadis JV team was met with several challenges. One of the biggest challenges included the number of design constraints the project had. The obstacle limitation surface, high intensity approach lights in the vicinity of the main runway and contaminated ground and flood levels all restricted the vertical geometry. As a result, close coordination across disciplines was required to overcome these constraints.

The project boundary constraints in relation to the project interfaces with the Port Botany Freight Railway Line, Sydney Airport, and Qube also needed to be addressed. These issues were resolved through good communication, regular meetings with key stakeholders, and co-office location with the project team delivering the Botany Rail Duplication. Regular team meetings ensured the project footprint considered all fundamentals and the design met project and construction constraints.

Our integrated team understood the various interfaces and challenges the Sydney Gateway project presented. A key focus on resolving significant geometric design constraints and requirements via cross discipline coordination, stakeholder engagement and digital engineering, bought together the delivery of a successful project.
