A key component in the urban redevelopment of Virginia Tech’s Health Sciences Technology campus is the new, award-winning design for the Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute.

The design inspiration of the facility is founded upon an interactive and collaborative approach to research and learning. To advance the medical school’s pedagogy while also providing maximum flexibility to future-proof for likely curriculum changes, the school stresses integrative, participatory learning with simulation environments and offers a problem-based learning approach. Students focus on actual patient casework with fewer traditional lectures and more hands-on learning, fully utilizing mock exam labs, multimedia classrooms, the research institute’s labs and facilities at the nearby Carilion Riverside Clinic and Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
