Responding to increased demand, the University of Kentucky (UK) Albert B. Chandler Hospital is expanding in a phased replacement of the existing hospital. This project supports UK\u2019s healthcare enterprise, which encompasses integrated outpatient, inpatient, academic and research functions.<\/p>\n
AECOM was retained as the \u201cNational Healthcare Architect\u201d for the master planning and design of this a new 1,244,000-square-foot replacement hospital. Its 512-bed inpatient tower is expandable to 825 beds. Departments in the new facility include surgery, imaging, emergency, dietary, central sterile and approximately 500,000 square feet of shell space for future diagnostic and treatment functions and expansion of imaging, surgery and beds. The provision of large areas of shell space for future growth required a highly flexible, sophisticated core and shell, developed through test-fits and careful organization of building infrastructure.<\/p>\n
The project also includes a 1,000-car parking ramp with a pedestrian bridge to the new bed tower, interim renovations; road realignments; and relocation and improvements to campus infrastructure.
