AECOM took over project management services for the façade renewal of Saturn´s flagship store in Hamburg. Construction covers cloaked the building for years. Bricks threatened to fall on passing pedestrians. The demolition of the historic Hertie ceramic façade at the Saturn building followed shortly after the approval in 2013. Not only the safety of passing pedestrians was at risk, also the image of the city was disturbed. The building is in a distinct location, right at the central station and in one of the most prestigious retail locations, Mönckebergstraße. The look of the city´s entrance upset many people, including politicians of Hamburgs urban planning department.
AECOM accompanied the transaction of the building through the property company to the new owner. Therefore the team knew the property very well. After completion of the transaction AECOM took over the project management of the renewal of the façade. From conclusion of the general planning contract with the architect over planning- and construction phase to acceptances of the project, AECOM ensured our client a smooth completion. Saturn inhabitates the building with its largest electronic store in Europe on over 24,000 m2 leasable area, which remained in operation during the construction phase. Only low restrictions occurred, caused by the closure of some parking spaces.
