AECOM is providing construction supervision and construction monitoring services for the Lakhta Center multifunctional complex, a landmark project that includes the first supertall tower in St. Petersburg, Russia. The complex will create a new business area outside of the historical section of St. Petersburg, thereby alleviating congestion in that part of the city.

Lakhta Center is a pilot integrated development project. It involves the construction of a mini city—along with public functions and transportation infrastructure—on the outskirts of St. Petersburg to create a sustainable district for life and work. Gazprom Neft and other Gazprom Group companies will form the center of the cluster in Primorsky district. The project also aims to not only increase the level of business activity in the city, but also in the Northwestern region as a whole.

Construction will encompass 387,000 square metres, including the high-rise tower, multifunctional building and the stylobate, which will house driveways and parking areas. The tower will rise up 462 metres and consist of 87 elevated and three underground floors. The finishing detail is the 104-meter spire. The design will feature a cone-shaped form with five square interconnected “petals” around the central kernel which will house five separate office wings with a total area of 76,000 square metres.

Record-Breaking Construction Techniques

Lakhta Center’s tower applies new and unique construction techniques. A continuous concrete pour of more than 19,600 cubic metres to create the site’s foundations broke the Guinness World Record in March 2015. The pour, which is 3,000 cubic metres more than the previous record, took 49 hours to complete. Concrete mixers made 2,540 trips from 13 different batch plants to the site. Every minute, on average, a concrete delivery truck entered the site, and 17 concrete pumps were used to finish the pour.

“This record-breaking, complex pour was a critical stage for this project,” said Arash Fatemi, operations director, Project & Construction Services, AECOM Continental Europe. “It was supervised by our highly professional construction services team led by Alexei Synchikov. AECOM’s ongoing success in delivering high-rise buildings in the region, including Citer Invest Towers in Moscow and Abu Dhabi Plaza in Astana, has made AECOM the leading construction and engineering company providing construction management, project management and construction supervision to clients in the region.”

Lakhta Center will also include a large office center and a scientific and educational complex. A sports complex is planned for the local community, as well as a children’s techno-park and a series of free public facilities, along with shops, restaurants, cafes and other services. A significant aspect of the project will be the improvement of transportation in Primorsky district.

An integrated approach to the arrangement of the urban space will create the necessary conditions for the development of business, attracting large companies and creating new highly paid jobs. A new business area, together with additional revenue into the city’s budget from new investor companies, will enable the preservation of St. Petersburg’s unique image.
