Qatar is the richest country in the world, with an annual gross domestic product (GDP) of USD187.9 billion. The oil and gas trade is the backbone of its economy and given Qatar’s proximity to the Persian Gulf, it’s vital for the nation’s economic development to have a modern port for importing and exporting commodities.

The existing port, located near the capital of Doha, is currently a major bottleneck to the development of Qatar. As part of the Qatar National Vision 2030, an initiative dedicated to advancing sustainable development and providing a higher standard of living for its citizens, AECOM was hired as program management consultant for the US$7-billion New Port Project.

The Hamad Port is creating a new world-class commercial port in Qatar, making it the world’s largest “greenfield” port-development project. Comprising a port, a base for the Qatari Emiri Naval Forces and a canal for the planned Qatar Economic Zone 3, the project will span a 26.5-square-kilometer area. The port will act as a catalyst for the country’s trading industry, better positioning Qatar to benefit from the expected regional growth in container and vehicle carrier traffic as well as general cargo traffic.

As the program management consultant for this project, AECOM is providing:
