AECOM announced today that John Daza, PE, project manager, transportation, has received a 2014 ACE Exemplary Mentor Award, sponsored by McGraw-Hill Construction’s Engineering News-Record magazine.

The award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the Architecture, Construction and Engineering (ACE) Mentor Program, a not-for-profit corporation that attracts more than 8,000 U.S. high school students annually to the architecture, planning, engineering and construction industries through hands-on mentoring with field experts.

Daza has served as an ACE mentor for four years and was recognized as a standout participant this year for his demonstrated leadership and unwavering commitment to mentoring students and other mentors, as well as increasing AECOM’s participation in the ACE New York program from one to three teams, supporting multiple ACE student graduates through internships at AECOM, and presenting ACE and its mission at many high school career days.

“It’s a great honor to receive this recognition,” said Daza.  “I share this award with AECOM’s New York City team leaders who have made our program a great success over the last several years.  Their dedication and hard work have enabled AECOM to sponsor three separate teams and 70 students for this year.”

Brian Gee, deputy project manager at AECOM and newly appointed team leader of Team 30, one of the three AECOM teams in the city, said, “John Daza goes above and beyond to help people around him.  When I joined ACE, he wanted to know what he could do to make my ACE experience meaningful, which is what he did for everyone, even veteran mentors alike, and this level of consideration speaks volumes about his abilities.”

“Time and time again John impresses me with his giving nature,” added AECOM’s Michael Paterno, resident engineer, water.  “With regard to ACE, he is tireless with his efforts supporting three separate teams.  I have had the great opportunity of working with John on a few projects over the past three years, including ACE and Derek Jeter’s Turn 2 Foundation.  I cannot imagine working with a more selfless individual.”

As a national sponsor of the ACE Mentor Program for the past five years, AECOM volunteers train future engineers, architects and construction professionals in urban and under-served communities, lead the program’s national and local affiliates, and provide scholarship opportunities to graduating students who have demonstrated exceptional interest and leadership skills in these professions.  The program is one of AECOM’s social responsibility efforts around the world dedicated to ensuring the success of the industry’s future generations.
