Health and safety concerns following a significant land slip in the hillside above the Midland Mainline at Unstone in Derbyshire, led to immediate speed restrictions being put in place. The line was later closed causing delays and associated costs.

On site quickly, AECOM helped to make sure the line was quickly reopened. In collaboration with Construction Marine Limited and Network Rail, AECOM designed and supervised the rapid construction of a granular shear key, perpendicular to the track. Devising this emergency solution meant the track was reopened three weeks ahead of schedule. Our services included a desk study and geomorphological assessment, emergency design of remedial works and detailed engineering of permanent remedial works.
