AECOM strengthens Singapore’s airport infrastructure to improve passengers’ travel experience, enhance operational efficiency and raise manpower productivity.

The world’s sixth busiest airport for international traffic Changi Airport’s existing three terminals are currently operating at more than 80 percent of the aggregate design capacity of 66 million passenger per annum. AECOM, together with other members of the consortium, was awarded a contract for the development of new Terminal 4 as part of Changi Airport’s plan to meet future air travel demands.

The project comprises all associated building and infrastructure works, which includes a new terminal building, multi-storey car park, ramp tower, other ancillary buildings and facilities such as roads, bridges and tunnels. AECOM is responsible for providing civil and structural as well as geotechnical engineering design services.

Terminal 4 will be built on the site of the former Budget Terminal. The main terminal will be a two-storey, 25-metre-high building with an iconic showpiece and a 300-metre-long Central Galleria. Innovative design and greater automation will also boost productivity and efficiency levels in the new terminal. Main challenges of the project include long span steel structures, coordination with specialized airport services and working within the vicinity of live airport operations and facilities.

Terminal 4 is designed with the flexibility to meet the operational needs of both regional full-service and low-cost carriers, handling 16 million passenger movements a year. It is scheduled to commence operations in 2017, catering to the continued growth of air traffic at Changi Airport and further strengthening Singapore’s status as a regional air hub.
