The MAX Green Line extension is TriMet’s first LRT extension comprising two significant non-contiguous segments integrated with existing track. AECOM served as the prime consultant for the design of the Portland Mall segment, including the track and civil engineering components. The Portland Mall segment adds 2.5 miles of new track in downtown Portland, with a new connection point to the existing light rail system at the Steel Bridge. AECOM’ design solution for the Steel Bridge track connection resulted in an overall cost savings of approximately $2 million.

The Portland Mall segment transforms an aging streetscape into a vibrant transit corridor with urban design amenities. The project enlivens the mall for retail businesses, pedestrians, cyclists and autos through renovated streetscape and additional amenities, art, better lighting, improved ADA accessibility, and upgraded shelters.

The overall design of the Mall Project received unanimous approval by the Portland Design Commission, and was awarded an Honor Award by American Council of Engineering Companies Oregon.
