Following the successful master plan of a 35-acre greenfield site by AECOM, Bethesda Medical Center selected AECOM to perform full architectural and engineering services for this phased development known at the Bethesda Medical Center at Arrow Springs. The development was phased into three separate projects.

The first phase was completed in 2006 and included:

  • 24-Hour, 25,000 annual visit Emergency Department
  • Occupational Medicine
  • Physical Therapy
  • Specialist Time Share Suites
  • Laboratory Services
  • Heart Treatment Center / Diagnostics
  • Pharmacy
  • Mobile Technology Dock
  • Radiology with C/T Scanner
  • Multiple Medical Office Suites

Phase Two included:

  • Ambulatory Surgery
  • Cath Lab
  • Endoscopies Lab
  • Expansion of the Imaging Department
  • Expansion of leasable medical office space
  • Nutritional Services
  • Sleep Center
  • Chemo / Infusion
  • Radiation Therapy
  • Short Stay Hospital

Phase Three included:

  • 100-bed Inpatient Tower
  • Expansion of existing services for adjusted volumes
  • Expansion of Medical Office practices

The new facility was designed with the maximum flexibility for growth in mind – flexibility by design. Careful planning and analysis of adjacency diagrams helped to establish a solid core hospital with flexible placeholder spaces and planned for seamless additions of anticipated future wings and departmental growth.
