AECOM, in alliance with Roughan O’Donovan, has been appointed by the National Roads Authority (NRA) to act as the Authority’s representative responsible for the management of the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Maintenance Contract on Ireland’s national roads.
Intelligent Transport Systems are advanced applications which aim to provide innovative services relating to different modes of transport and traffic management. This will enable various road users to be better informed, and make safer, more coordinated and ‘smarter’ use of transport networks.
ITS refers to all electronic equipment based on transport networks and its significance has increased in recent times as authorities, such as the NRA, look to optimise the use of transport links such as the existing motorway networks as opposed to constructing new roadways.
AECOM manage and monitor the performance of the ITS Maintenance Contractors. Equipment
Maintenance that is managed by AECOM includes variable message and ‘ghost-driver’ signs (that alert drivers going the wrong way on a motorway), weather stations, emergency phones, CCTV and number plate recognition cameras, to ensure that the NRA is deriving the maximum benefit from these assets which have been deployed at a substantial capital investment.
The contract is led by employees in our Dublin office who draw on AECOM’s international ITS experience with support provided by experts in our U.K. and U.S. offices. In this way AECOM supplements local knowledge with international knowledge to deliver added value in the execution of these specialised services.
