The Ionia Odos is a vast motorway that runs for 196km up the west side of Greece from the Rio-Antirrio Bridge across the Gulf of Corinth up to the Egnatia motorway on the outskirts of Ioannina. It includes 24 bridges of a total length of 7 km, four tunnels of a total length of 11.2 km, 77 underpasses and 24 overpasses.
The motorway meets a long-existing demand, crossing two regions and four counties. It will help drive economic growth, and boost the wider development of the area by improving access to major tourist and archaeological sites.
It connects the west Greek coast with the two main east-west motorways, upgrading urban and rural centres such as Ioannina, Arta and Agrinio. It serves and connects the ports of Patra, Astakos, and Igoumenitsa. It also cuts the drive from Antirio to Ioannina from 3.5 hours to 1 hour and 40 minutes.
The Ionia Odos motorway is a major concession project that AECOM and its Greek partner OMEK jointly delivered as independent engineer.
