As climate change accelerates, environmental regulations are tightening. Ensuring the industrial sector meets those regulatory standards is therefore becoming increasingly critical in the race to net zero.
In 2020, we were commissioned to identify the potential and existing environment, health and safety (EHS) impacts of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) – one of India’s leading gas and oil companies.
Helping BPCL manage environmental impacts with a data-led approach
We were tasked with carrying out an EHS due diligence assessment of more than 500 sites across India.
This involved developing questionnaires for primary BPCL sites (which we visited) and secondary sites (using existing data only).
Using these surveys, we examined factors such as solid and liquid waste management, air emissions, noise pollution and potential soil and groundwater impacts – as well as fire safety and compliance with EHS permits.
The resulting data provided an overview of BPCL’s potential and existing EHS compliances and the environmental impacts of their operations.
Harnessing smart solutions for EHS issues
Leveraging this information, we used our expertise to help the client identify key EHS issues and flag areas for improvement.
We also advised on how to minimise and mitigate risks and ensure compliance with local and international best practice standards.
From engaging relevant key experts from our global network to obtaining valuable insight from our specialists distributed on the ground, collaboration was pivotal to this project – enabling us to complete the assessments at pace.
Better forecasting, fewer environmental impacts
Thanks to our advisory work, BPCL is now better able to anticipate and control the environmental and social impacts of their work.
Whether through planning and obtaining permits or identifying issues related to potential contamination, we are helping it meet regulatory standards and identify risks.
This means that BPCL can make tangible steps to protect surrounding habitats and communities – and set a positive example for others in the industry to follow.
