LOS ANGELES (January 30, 2018) — A Hathaway Dinwiddie and AECOM joint venture has been selected by the University of Southern California (USC) to manage the renovation of the renowned Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Construction is now underway at the historic sports facility, which was formally commemorated with a groundbreaking ceremony on January 29. The Coliseum, located in Exposition Park adjacent to the university’s campus, has been the home field for USC Trojans football since its opening in 1923.

Renovations on the 93,607-seat Coliseum have been carefully designed to both protect its landmark status and greatly improve the fan experience. These improvements include restoration of the Coliseum peristyle, its signature feature; all new seats with increased legroom; new box suites and lounges; a new press box; upgraded concourses; new concession stands; state-of-the-art audio, video, and Wi-Fi technology; and replacement of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems to meet current standards.

“It’s truly an honor to bring this historic and legendary venue into the 21st century,” said Arthur Kozinski, senior vice president of Hathaway Dinwiddie. “Together with AECOM, we are engaging with the community to bring local talent and expertise, construction innovations and unique collaboration to the project. We are pleased to continue working with our long-standing client, USC, to bring the required resources and proficiency to assure a grand re-opening for the 2019 USC Trojans football season.”

“The Coliseum is a celebrated and notable landmark in Los Angeles, requiring a team of experts uniquely qualified to preserve its historical integrity,” said Eric Schreiner, executive vice president of AECOM’s Construction Services group. “We’re thrilled to partner with Hathaway Dinwiddie on this remarkable facility for USC, together providing unparalleled sports building expertise and the latest in construction technology to complete these much-needed renovations.”

Embraced as an important Los Angeles icon, the Coliseum has hosted countless historic events during its nine decades of operation. It is the only facility in the world to play host to two Olympiads (X and XXIII), two Super Bowls (I and VII), one World Series (1959), a Papal Mass and visits by three U.S. Presidents: John F. Kennedy, Richard M. Nixon and Ronald Reagan. The Coliseum will once again host the Olympic Games in 2028 when they return to Los Angeles. The Coliseum is jointly owned by the state, the county and the city of Los Angeles, and is managed and operated by USC under a 98-year lease that extends through 2111.

The Coliseum renovation is Hathaway Dinwiddie’s ninth project with USC. With more than 100 years of experience in play, it is a leader in building landmark cultural, educational and sports facilities such as the Getty Center, the Getty Villa, the Golden State Warriors Practice Facility, and, more recently, the 1.2 million-square-foot USC Village.

AECOM has built more than 150 sports facilities, typically fast-tracked, and has never missed an opening day. Recent projects include Mercedes-Benz Stadium and Philips Arena in Atlanta, GA; Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, MI; Arizona State University’s Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, AZ; T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV; and Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, CA.
