Mr. Dieter brings 32 years of experience to the SONGS Decommissioning Solutions project, which is the largest commercial nuclear plant decommissioning in the United States.
LOS ANGELES (September 26, 2018) — AECOM, a premier, fully integrated global infrastructure firm, announced today that it has appointed Tom Dieter to lead the AECOM-EnergySolutions joint venture to decommission the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS). He will serve as the executive sponsor for SONGS Decommissioning Solutions (SDS) under the Southern California Edison contract, which was previously held by Matt Marston, a senior vice president of Commercial D&D Expansion.
“We’re fortunate to welcome Tom to AECOM and the Songs Decommissioning Solutions team, we know this important project will benefit from the best of his leadership and technical expertise,” said Randy Wotring, AECOM’s chief operating officer. “Building on Matt’s leadership, Tom’s commitment to safety, integrity, and quality delivery are matched by his technical experience—and will increase the value offered by our team of industry-leading experts. Tom will prove an exceptional leader in restoring this site for future use.”
Mr. Dieter has more than 32 years of experience managing commercial and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) nuclear projects. He has decommissioned to completion government-owned test reactors, three large high-risk plutonium and uranium production facilities, spent fuel ponds, and numerous nuclear operations support facilities, as well as commercial nuclear power facilities.
Safely decommissioning the San Onofre nuclear plant is a significant priority for Southern California, and it is the largest commercial nuclear plant decommissioning to date in the United States, including used fuel management, radiological decommissioning and site restoration.
SDS combines more than 50 years of global decommissioning experience between AECOM and EnergySolutions. The joint venture is responsible for the dismantlement and decontamination work, restoration of the site and reduction of residual radioactivity to levels that allow for future site use.
