Located on the Arabian Gulf’s eastern coast, along the main highway leading into Abu Dhabi from Dubai, Al Raha is Abu Dhabi’s largest and most prestigious project to date.
AECOM led the comprehensive, mixed-use Al Raha Beach development, a hallmark project for the Middle East. AECOM experts were responsible for the detailed infrastructure planning, design and construction for the 1,000-acre (500-hectare) city that serves a population of 200,000 people.
Comprising 12 urban precincts, each with their own distinctive character, the development has a unique image and identity, has set new standards of architecture and urban-design excellence, is environmentally sustainable, and has created a best-practice model for development within the UAE.
Significant design initiatives include:
- A strong public transportation network, including bus, water taxis and bicycle networks;
- Emphasis on walkability and outdoor activity through high-quality shaded landscapes and facilities;
- Treated sewerage irrigation;
- Innovative storm water treatment and management, channeling water through landscape wadi and mangrove “natural” systems; and
- Iconic infrastructural landmarks including bridges, water features and public transportation structures.
AECOM provided the following services:
- Design of all utility infrastructure services and internal road network
- Design of artificial beaches
- Design of marine structures
- Site supervision and construction activities
AECOM energy specialists also developed the entire electrical network in the city, which includes three primary substations at 132/22 kV 4 x 20MVA, around 100 secondary 22/0.4 kV substations and the LV distribution network.
