Before officially opening for service, the Calgary Airport Authority hosted a two-day event that included a 5 and 8 -kilometer run on the new runway. Guests were also able to walk the runway and see various aircraft on display and build model planes.

“Being a part of completing YYC’s new Runway 17L-35R is a major achievement and one we are very proud of — it’s the result of teamwork throughout every stage of the project,” says Marty Shenfield, project manager.

AECOM and sub-consultant Hatch Mott MacDonald provided project management services for the Authority’s Runway Development Program (RDP). The new 14,000-foot long, 200-foot wide runway is one of the longest in Canada and has the capacity to land the world’s largest aircraft. In addition, the RDP includes Category III navigational aids, taxiway system that uses high-speed exits, underpass structures at two taxiways, airfield lighting, controls and a new Field Electric Center.

The RDP is the first step in an overall expansion of the airport. A new international terminal will debut in 2015, also managed by AECOM. The expansion will see increased passenger traffic and ultimately add new airlines and new routes, which will continue to stimulate the local economy.
