Connecting the Netherlands to 313 destinations, Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport is one of Europe’s busiest aviation hubs and a key driver of the region’s economic growth.
Schiphol’s Pier A is the ninth and latest pier to be built at the airport. Besides providing the airport with eight new gates, it will serve as an iconic new addition that boasts impressive sustainable design credentials.
Together with Cepezed and other consultants, we delivered full design services for Pier A including preliminary design, detail design and technical design, and provided construction support.
Sustainable design
As well as increasing capacity, minimising adverse environmental impact was a key design objective.
Pier A has been designed to align with LEED Gold certification, a globally recognised green building standard. By incorporating elements such as biomaterial, insulating glass, recycled plastic and solar panels into the design, the new pier structure – once complete – will be the most sustainable pier at Schiphol.
Digital delivery
The design team also utilised digital environments to work more efficiently. For instance, we implemented a common data environment during the project to facilitate information exchange across disciplines and enforce our company quality procedures. This common data environment has ensured that all disciplines are continuously developing a coordinated design. Coordination between all involved parties was carried out using 3D BIM tools.
