As a sub to Battelle, AECOM assisted with the development a Concept of Operations (ConOps) for selected connected vehicle vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) safety applications, and the underlying connected vehicle system, for crash avoidance for the U.S. Department of Transportation. The ConOps describes the current state of operations with respect to roadway vehicle safety across the country, establishes the reasons for change, and describes the selected connected vehicle V2I safety applications in terms of their features and operations. Connected vehicle safety applications investigated in the ConOps document included:

  • Speed warning
  • Curve speed warning
  • Red light violation warning
  • Stop sign gap assist
  • Stop sign violation warning
  • Oversize vehicle warning
  • Spot weather warning (ice, fog, dust storms, flood)
  • Rail crossing warning

AECOM’s responsibilities included: identifying, collecting and analyzing documentation from prior and ongoing research; analyzing research programs in light of best practices for traffic engineering, traffic signal controller engineering and traffic safety engineering; assisting with developing the ConOps and functional requirements documents; and participating in stakeholder workshops to capture user needs and functionality requirements.
