The 125,000 sq. ft. College of Arts & Sciences building, which houses five existing academic departments, includes offices for staff, classrooms, biology and computer laboratories. The building is critical to the new image of the campus: it establishes the new, more collegial architectural vocabulary that will be reflected in future buildings along the campus “green.”
Located in Akron, Ohio, on what was a parking lot near the center of the campus, the College of Arts & Sciences building frames the new green and accommodates, on its site, a potential expansion of the main library facility. Interior planning and design of the building combines monumental public spaces with small individual spaces for faculty, graduate and undergraduate students in a manner that creates many levels of human interaction and fosters learning.
