The Winchester Flood Control Project, where AECOM led the design, was recently selected as a top project for stormwater and erosion control by Stormwater Solutions magazine. The magazine picks remarkable and innovative industry projects annually, and recognizes them in an issue of the magazine as well as online throughout the year.
The Winchester Flood Control Project in Winchester, Mass., includes construction of an integrated management system to reduce flooding near McCall Elementary School, Manchester Field and the adjacent neighborhood, and reduces peak rates of stormwater discharge to the Aberjona River.
AECOM was hired to evaluate the potential for an infiltration system in Manchester Field to alleviate frequently observed flooding in the area. We determined the existing stormwater system was too small to handle even the lightest rains and needed upgrading. When discussing possible solutions, the project team determined there was not enough space for an aboveground water detention solution. This meant moving the entire system underground. Town officials eventually installed a new storm water detention system in two phases.
“Being recognized as a top project by an industry publication further illustrates the expertise AECOM can bring to a project,” says Jacob San Antonio, P.E., water resources engineer. “In this instance we were able to make major improvements in a community that was struggling with frequent floods, so it feels good to know we made a difference for those residents and be recognized within the industry at the same time.”
