As London’s new rail line opens, AECOM celebrates its 30-year role to support the scheme’s delivery
London (May 24, 2022) — AECOM, the world’s trusted infrastructure consultancy firm, today celebrates the opening of the Elizabeth line in London, marking its various roles over the past 30 years to help deliver the scheme, which is one of the most significant infrastructure projects ever undertaken in the UK.
The Elizabeth line will bring an extra 1.5 million people to within 45 minutes of central London, link key employment, business and leisure hubs and serve 200 million people per year — improving journey times and easing congestion. It will transform rail transport in London and the South East, increasing central London rail capacity by ten percent.
AECOM has supported the project in various ways, including route selection, preliminary and detailed design. It led the multidisciplinary design packages for Farringdon and Paddington stations, two of the route’s flagship central London stations, as well as multidisciplinary design services for the Pudding Mill Lane Portal and DLR station. As part of the Transcend joint venture, alongside Jacobs and The Nichols Group, AECOM worked as a programme partner, supplying strategic management services to help deliver Crossrail.
Colin Wood, Chief Executive, Europe and India, AECOM, said: “The opening of the Elizabeth line is a fantastic milestone to be celebrated across our industry. The project is a beacon of British success and innovation, showcasing the very best of the UK’s technical talent. Many engineers have developed their careers working on Crossrail and are now taking those skills to major infrastructure across the world. We’re very proud of AECOM’s role in the Elizabeth line’s delivery and the legacy it leaves for the people of London.”
The Elizabeth line opened to passengers on Tuesday 24 May 2022, with services between Paddington and Abbey Wood.
