3 MiamiCentral

3 MiamiCentral is the first mixed-use tower to be completed at MiamiCentral, a new transit-oriented development in downtown Miami which includes a transit hub and rail station, two office buildings (2 and 3 MiamiCentral), twin apartment towers, retail shops and the city’s first food hall.

The project has opened in time for passenger rail service to commence via All Aboard Florida’s Brightline, a 235-mile network of rail lines connecting South Florida to Central Florida. Since its opening in early 2018, the 12-story building has set a new standard of urban connectivity and has quickly attracted tenants which include Brightline’s corporate headquarters. Features of the project include 95,000 square feet of office space, public art by neighborhood artists integrated at street level as permanent installations and a parking garage that is wrapped with an image-perforated metal facade featuring artist Robert McKnight.

City of Miami College of Policing, Miami-Dade School of Law Studies, Homeland Security, and Forensic Sciences

A partnership between the City of Miami Police Department and the Miami-Dade County School Board, the College of Policing is a state-of-the-art police department training facility and magnet high school focused on forensic science and law. Designed to be used by local, regional and international law enforcement personnel, the new training facility features a separate entrance while being connected to the existing headquarters.

AECOM team designed a 14-position indoor firing range for static and dynamic training to facilitate realistic scenarios. Applying the latest technology and acoustic finish materials, the range utilizes an inclined dry-system bullet trap and accommodates pistol, rifle and shotgun rounds.

To support learning and best practices in law enforcement, the College of Policing integrates classrooms and a 200-seat auditorium with simultaneous translation capabilities for local, regional and international law enforcement personnel. This auditorium is available to the local neighborhoods for after-hours use, helping to build trust and civic pride within the community.

Jackson Memorial Hospital

Jackson Health System, one of the nation’s largest public health systems, recently embarked on a $1.4 billion, 10-year capital plan that includes new construction projects, the renovation of existing facilities, and infrastructure improvements. This strategic plan will transform Jackson into a modernized, patient-centered healthcare system that can better meet the future needs of Miami-Dade County residents and international patients who travel to Jackson because of its medical expertise.

The plan provides a clear visualization of the future of the health system’s facilities, best practice patient and visitor flow patterns, alignment of services with facilities, and a step-by-step transition plan and costs.

AECOM is providing program management owner’s representative services to assist Jackson for the duration of this project. Our scope of work will encompass projects throughout Jackson’s entire integrated healthcare delivery system, which includes Jackson Memorial Hospital, the nation’s largest public hospital; Holtz Children’s Hospital; the construction of a new, world-class Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital; Jackson Behavioral Health Hospital; Jackson North Medical Center; Jackson South Community Hospital; a new 100-bed hospital and medical complex to be called Jackson West in west Miami-Dade County; and up to 12 urgent care centers that will expand Jackson’s reach into neighborhoods throughout Miami-Dade County. Most of the major construction projects will be completed in the next five to seven years.

Airport Link Miami Intermodal Center – Earlington Heights Connector

AECOM provided final design services for a 2.4 mile elevated guideway extension of the Miami-Dade Transit (MDT) Heavy Rail System connecting the existing Earlington Heights Station to a new station at the Miami Intermodal Center adjacent to Miami Airport. AECOM was the prime consultant performing all of the project management functions as well as the structural engineering and track-work design for the guideway. This $325 million extension had numerous challenges involving long-span segmental concrete box girder design over the Miami River, an active Tri-Rail freight corridor and a major expressway (SR112). AECOM saved MDT and Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) more than $60 million by re-configuring the station location so that direct connections were achieved to the Miami Intermodal Center and by adjusting the alignment over SR112 thus avoiding a significant amount of right-of-way acquisition.

Included in the project is a four-level station integrated with a bus terminal plaza and a pedestrian overpass, which connects the station to the rental car facility and automated people mover station that serves the airport. The proposed station design won a prestigious American Institute of Architects Award in 2006 out of more than 120 submissions. The project also won an Outstanding Engineering Award from the Florida Society of Civil Engineers and another meritorious award from the Citizens for Independent Transit Trust.

The contract was all-inclusive providing a complete finished line section including civil, structural, and track-work design; systems engineering (traction power, train control and communications), as well as architectural, landscaping, and mechanical and electrical engineering services. AECOM performed all of the geotechnical investigations, aerial photogrammetry, and mapping services, right-of-way needs determination, scheduling, and cost estimating. AECOM has also managed all of the interfaces with third parties including FDOT, the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority, Tri-Rail, Florida Power and Light, and all other utility companies for service connections and relocations.
