HKRI Tai Koo Hui

The HKRI Taikoo Hui is a large-scale mixed-used development comprising of a lifestyle shopping complex, two premium Grade A office towers, two boutique hotels and serviced apartments.

This prime complex is located at Nanjing West Road — one of Shanghai’s major shopping thoroughfares — and offers easy access to three lines on the Shanghai Metro. Since its grand opening in 2017, HKRI Taikoo Hui has become a new business, shopping and entertainment hub thanks to its prime location, seamless transport connections and brand positioning.

The total construction area for this project is approximately 468,000 square meters. The shopping mall takes about 100,000 square meters of the total space, while the two office towers — HKRI Center One at 170 meters tall and HKRI Center Two at 250 meters high — occupy about 170,000 square meters. The Sukhothai Shanghai, The Middle House and The Middle House Residences are part of the development and occupy more than 50,000 square meters of the total area. A four-story-deep basement accommodates commercial facilities and 1,200 parking spaces. The complex is connected to Shanghai Metro Line 2, 13 and 12.

AECOM’s multidisciplinary team provided full structural engineering consultancy services and ensured that the project design and construction met strict safety and settlement requirements. This was in conjunction with creating a unique landscape design for the development.

One of the biggest design challenges encountered was constructing high-rise buildings adjacent to proposed city metro stations and existing tunnels. The AECOM team conducted a detailed analysis and simulation of ground movement and building settlement to ensure compliance with the city’s stringent settlement criteria and design standards. A sizable full-time site inspection and supervision team was deployed to work with the client’s construction management team to ensure safety, quality and timeliness in meeting the project objectives and the client’s high expectations.

It is worth mentioning that the historical “Minli Middle School” building — built in the 1920s and used by the school since the 1940s — needed to be moved during construction. In order to protect this historical legacy, the superstructure of the 3,300-ton building was hydraulically jacked up and slid along a pre-laid track that runs across a distance of 57 meters. The building was moved to its current location in 13 days, a monumental achievement in historical building preservation.

To integrate Shanghai’s east-west cultural heritage, the AECOM team took inspiration from traditional Shikumen elements in creating a sustainable landscape design that integrates with the overall architectural style. The ingenious arrangement of trees, flowers, water features and art sculpture has made this a hidden spiritual retreat that promotes a holistic life of work and leisure in the crowded city. In addition, AECOM provided a unique customized landscape design for the two boutique hotels, where a strong classical Chinese style blends with a modern and elegant Thai style, adding an artistic atmosphere to this landmark complex in Shanghai.

China Shipping Headquarters

Mindful of its important geographical location among Shanghai’s significant landmarks, the new China Shipping Company headquarters offers a modern setting that respects the site’s past.

The building is located along the bank of the Huangpu River, just across from the Bund, Shanghai’s famous waterfront. Originally, the site was occupied by the Dongjia Ferry House, the best ferry in the Far East in the 20th Century. The industrial heritage of the site has greatly influenced China’s modern maritime history, culture and techniques.

‘Flow’ is the main concept that organizes the building’s interior and exterior spaces. AECOM’s concept unites the site with the building’s facade, integrating the podiums, the tower and the internal atrium design through flowing lines. Views across the Huangpu River, Binshui Greenbelt and the old ferry are connected along the main axis of the site. Buildings located on the north and south sides are slightly rotated, giving a direct view from the atrium toward the Huangpu River. The tower is designed on the north side of the axis, where its height creates an overlook to Lujiazui, Shanghai’s financial district. Buildings at the south side of the axis provide connections and access between the building and the river.

The building’s exterior is integrated into the urban environment, designed as a new landmark with scenic spots for everyone to enjoy. A new ferry garden provides relaxation and education with an exhibition to learn about the old ferry’s history. The rooftop is also a landscaped terrace, creating a setting to admire and coexist among the architecture, history and stunning location.

Autodesk Shanghai Corporate Office

The advanced design technologies available today, such as 3D software, shape the techniques interior designers use to design space. A space can represent technical advancements and the corresponding corporate culture.

The world’s leading 3D design software company, providing prominent digital design services for the architecture, engineering and entertainment media industries, Autodesk’s Shanghai Office is located in the Pudong Lujiazui Software Park. As the company’s business and organization expanded in 2012, Autodesk added two floors, accommodating 200 employees. Reflecting a creative and high-tech corporate culture, the corporate office interior design provided by AECOM creates a healthy and pleasant environment for staff, promoting communication and collaboration among teams through design openness and transparency. The design concept is a “minicity” full of vitality and passion: each department is within its own independent and quiet “street block,” while “street corners” and “plazas” of varying sizes and shapes open space for cross-team engagements and social bonding.

Additionally, its movement design replaces mundane walks with interesting urban strolls past “roadside” cafes and park benches. The office adopts Herman Miller’s high-performance workstation system, providing 120-degree desktops to facilitate interaction, and hence collaboration, among team members.

Throughout the process of interior and MEP design, AECOM used the Revit and 3D Max software developed by Autodesk. These programs allow for efficient communication between designers, clients and contractors, so the project can be completed on time. AECOM integrated Autodesk’s corporate culture into the design, so its technological advantages are visible in every corner of the office. This integration creates a sense of participation for principals and one of belonging for employees.

Shanghai International Financial Center

The Shanghai International Finance Center is amongst the most iconic landmarks at the heart of the global city’s Lujiazui Financial District. The project consists of two tall buildings. One building is an 820-foot (250-meter) multifunction tower, with the upper part for the Ritz-Carlton hotel and the lower part for HSBC’s China Headquarters. The other building is an 853-foot (260-meter) tower containing Grade A offices, a retail podium, serviced apartments and four basement levels, as well as the Shanghai IFC Mall, which houses high-end retailers with Apple anchoring in the sunken amphitheater.

As the structural engineer for this complex project with super-high-rise towers, AECOM’s technical capability in meeting design challenges helped the client to achieve its plan and design intent within schedule and budget. AECOM was also the landscape designer of the complex’s open space.
