Park Nicollet – Heart and Vascular Center

Park Nicollet’s new Heart and Vascular Center is the new front door to Methodist Hospital. The building was designed through a highly collaborative process; the physical environment also encourages collaboration between physicians and clinical staff, benefiting patients through better teaming in diagnosis and treatment planning.

The facility is adjacent to an environmentally protected wetland. Views to the wetlands and motifs drawn from nature served as inspiration for the design, helping connect patients and families with the natural world and its beneficial effect on patient outcomes.

The wetland also provided inspiration for the project’s environmentally responsible planning and design approach. While LEED certification was not a stated project goal, the project integrates a number of sustainable design principles.

Park Nicollet Women’s Center

Park Nicollet’s Women’s Center, is the only facility in Minnesota, and one of only a few in the nation, to offer preventive, specialty and integrative care for women in one location. The center provides 15 preventive and specialty care services that women use most including ob-gyn, urogynecology, gynecologic oncology, mental health, nutrition, physical therapy, mammograms and ultrasound.

Designed to support changes in healthcare delivery, the new 28,150 sq ft center provides an attractive, flexible space for improving health outcomes, enhancing patient experience and convenience, and optimizing organization effectiveness.

Park Nicollet Melrose Institute

The only program of its kind in the Midwest — medically based and dedicated solely to the treatment of eating disorders — the Melrose Institute is an important addition to the region’s healthcare community. Designed by Ellerbe Becket, an AECOM Company, the new building consolidates the services of the former Park Nicollet Eating Disorders Institute, and provides inpatient, outpatient and residential care.

Park Nicollet is a long-time proponent of using Lean methodologies to improve healthcare quality and efficiency. For this project, Lean processes were used to analyze the flow of the existing practice, identify its strengths and weaknesses, and eliminate unnecessary waste. The outcome was development of a new model of care for eating disorders, which in turn shaped the building’s planning and design.

A notable aspect of this project is its connection to nature, including views toward a neighboring nature preserve and special therapeutic healing gardens. For a project in such a lovely natural setting, incorporating natural and sustainable materials and design principles was of great importance to both the client and the design team. Patient families and staff alike have said that the Melrose Institute “is the perfect setting for the treatment of eating disorders.”
