The company has been appointed to support a major programme to establish a hydrogen network across the UK to help decarbonise energy generation and heavy industry
LONDON (October 1, 2025) — AECOM, the trusted global infrastructure leader, today announced it has been appointed by National Gas to provide Programme Management Office (PMO) support for Project Union East Coast, part of a major programme to repurpose existing and build new pipelines to create a core hydrogen network for Great Britain. Under the contract, AECOM will deliver a broad scope of programme management and advisory services to support National Gas as it progresses Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) for the East Coast section of Project Union.
Project Union involves repurposing parts of the 5,000-mile gas National Transmission System and building new pipelines to carry 100 percent hydrogen. Starting on the east coast of England, the first section will link two industrial clusters in Teesside and the Humber.
“Establishing a new hydrogen network is an important step in accelerating the UK’s clean energy transition,” said Richard Whitehead, chief executive of AECOM’s Europe and India region, AECOM. “Project Union will unlock the growth of a hydrogen economy in the UK, provide essential low-carbon hydrogen, enhance energy security and support the country’s 2050 net zero ambitions. We’re proud to support National Gas as it progresses the first section of this transformative programme, leveraging our full breadth of energy, programme management and advisory expertise to help shape a low-carbon gas future for the UK.”
AECOM will deliver advisory capability and resourcing support to National Gas’s Project Union East Coast, helping to build a high performing PMO function. Services include project governance, budget and financial control, performance oversight and reporting. AECOM’s team will work closely with National Gas in a fully integrated manner, helping to develop the client’s major projects capability in the longer term.
