High Speed Two (HS2) Ltd has awarded the Lot 2 civils design and environmental services contract for Phase 2b of the UK’s new high-speed railway to an AECOM Capita INECO Joint Venture. The contract, which was signed xx, is expected to be worth between £80M and £100M to the AECOM-led Joint Venture over the next seven years.
Under the contract, the Joint Venture team will deliver preliminary designs and a full Environmental Impact Assessment, including the Environmental Report, for a 90km section of the route from Birmingham to just south of Sheffield. This section of the route also includes a new East Midlands Hub station at Toton, which is expected to be a catalyst for growth in the Derby and Nottingham areas. The work delivered by the Joint Venture will provide HS2 Ltd with the documentation and support needed to obtain Royal Assent for the hybrid Bill.
The Joint Venture will provide a range of multidisciplinary services for the scheme, including civil engineering and environmental consultancy services. The work will be delivered by a team of more than 200 people from all three companies based in offices across the UK.
The contract builds on previous environment, engineering and management work delivered by AECOM, Capita and INECO on both Phase 1 of the HS2 route from London to Birmingham and Phase 2, which is the section of the route from Birmingham to Manchester and Leeds.
The Joint Venture will be supported on the civil and environmental work by a number of specialist sub-consultants, including Weston Williamson, Morgan Sindall, Reading Agricultural Consultants and Thomson Ecology.
Scheduled to open in 2033, the dedicated high-speed lines are set to provide extra capacity between London, Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester, improving connectivity and reducing journey times.
