Under a master services contract with Dow Chemical, AECOM provides health and safety compliance services at active Dow facilities in the U.S., performs environmental remediation at older and unused facilities and conducts environmental due diligence. AECOM also manages a variety of environmental projects at Dow sites in Europe, South Africa and Turkey.
One of our assignments is to help develop overall closure strategies for Dow. A project at a facility in Freeport, Texas, involved the closure of a total of nine waste management areas, including landfills, treatment systems and associated facilities. The total area of the closure was 204 acres. Some of the closure activities included the removal of 210 million gallons of water, installation of a river-bank erosion control system, demolition of equipment, construction of a cap over the entire site, a slurry wall around the entire perimeter and ecological restoration.
