The existing 34th Street entrance to New York Penn Station is used by tens of thousands of commuters daily. To alleviate congestion, the New York Metropolitan Authority is planning to build another new entrance directly connecting to the Long Island Rail Road corridor from the street level near 33rd Street.
AECOM performed the design and engineering study for this new entrance. As part of this study, we gathered existing pedestrian origin and destination (OD) data, forecasted future ridership, created pedestrian models using Legion SpaceWorks for existing conditions to identity congestion hotspots and developed scenarios to help improve design concepts. Egress analysis was also conducted to ensure the station improvements were in compliance with existing building codes, as well as NFPA 130 criteria.
