AECOM has delivered personal travel planning (PTP) advice as part of a scheme targeting more than 34,500 households across the towns of Loughborough and Coalville in Leicestershire. PTP is an approach used to encourage people to reduce single occupancy car use in favour of walking, cycling, public transport and car sharing.

AECOM delivered the project as part of Leicestershire County Council’s ‘Choose How You Move’ campaign, which aims to encourage people to use sustainable travel options.

Independent evaluation reports, prepared after the field work was delivered, found positive improvements had been made to travel habits, with car use reducing by between 4 and 22% amongst participants (across the different phases of work). The change in travel behaviour resulted in an estimated carbon saving of 475 tonnes per annum – equivalent to a reduction in vehicle journeys of over 3.5 million kilometres.

The project won the Sustainability category in the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) Awards 2014.
