The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) was looking to alleviate congestion at Metro Center Station, one of its busiest stations. WMATA is planning to build an underground tunnel linking Farragut North and Farragut West Stations to provide additional transfer options between the Red Line and the Blue/Silver/Orange Lines.
As part of a feasibility study, AECOM gathered existing pedestrian origin and destination (OD) data, forecasted future ridership, created pedestrian models using Legion SpaceWorks for existing conditions to identity congestion hotspots and developed scenarios to help improve design concepts. Egress analysis was also conducted to ensure the station improvements were in compliance with existing building codes, as well as NFPA 130 criteria.
