Advancing the little train that could

A new light rail train will restore passenger service to communities in South Jersey

Currently in development, a new light rail line will renew connections and forge new opportunities for residents, employees and students in South Jersey. The 18-mile Glassboro-Camden Line (GCL) light rail will restore passenger rail service along an existing rail line that traverses Gloucester and Camden counties, improving connections to cultural, educational, recreational, medical and economic opportunities across the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington metropolitan area.

The new light rail is a joint effort between NJ TRANSIT, the Delaware River Port Authority (DPRA) and the South Jersey Transportation Authority (SJTA). When completed, the GCL will make station stops in Glassboro, Pitman, Sewell, Mantua Township, Woodbury Heights, Woodbury, Westville, Gloucester City and Camden.

Benefits beyond commuting

While the new Glassboro-Camden Line is expected to improve daily commutes, it will also provide benefits beyond shorter travel times. Establishing station stops across towns in Gloucester and Camden counties will enhance equity and economic development by delivering greater access to small businesses in downtown areas. The line will also deliver environmental benefits, as it will help reduce roadway congestion and cut down greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles.

Pre-construction sets the tone

The project took a major step forward as NJ TRANSIT, DPRA and SJTA approved a contract with our joint venture, South Jersey Transit Partners team. Under the contract, we are providing preliminary engineering design, project management and professional services for GCL’s pre-construction phase.

The three-year preliminary engineering design phase will define the overall project configuration, including developing a strategic construction plan. We will also deliver design specifications and contract documents, secure right-of-way acquisitions and easements, and undertake geotechnical and utility surveys. The joint venture will also provide project management office functions, including community relations and public involvement throughout the design and construction phases.

Increasing access and opportunity for all

As we partner with all three agencies to advance the new Glassboro-Camden Line, we are helping them meet their objective of enhance connectivity for communities in South Jersey. Providing convenient transportation for passengers will not only improve commutes, it will open new opportunities for work, education, recreation, and cultural and economic development for thousands more residents across the region.
