To train the next generation of biomedical scientists and to advance transformative research, Virginia Tech and Carilion Clinic once again looked to AECOM to provide the design excellence required to expand their biomedical research capabilities.
In July of 2020, the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC opened adjacent to the AECOM-designed Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute. Connected to the medical school and research institute by an enclosed elevated walkway, this 140,000 square foot research institute serves as a new model for biomedical and behavioral science. This newest facility brings together, under one roof, researchers and clinicians, undergraduate, graduate and medical students, and human and veterinary clinical subjects developing scientific advances that address human and animal health and disease.
Situated at the heart of the Roanoke campus, the building is designed to facilitate collaborative discovery with experiential learning environments and laboratories organized around interactive research themes. World-renown scientists and researchers are already studying and developing cures for brain health and disorders, biomaterials and body device interfaces, cardiovascular research, metabolism and obesity, and infectious diseases and immunity.
AECOM’s design encompassed a combination of wet lab, dry lab, and core spaces to support the thematic areas. Key sustainability areas were identified early and the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute was awarded a LEED Silver Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
