The announcement came at a meeting AECOM attended with U.S. President Obama, administration officials and other large government suppliers at the Department of Energy headquarters on March 19 to discuss the business and environmental benefits of GHG-reduction targets. Just prior to the meeting, President Obama introduced an executive order to cut federal government GHG emissions 40 percent over the next decade, saving taxpayers up to US$18 billion in avoided energy costs, according to a White House statement.
“We’re proud to advance this effort in the private sector,” said Gary Lawrence, the company’s vice president and chief sustainability officer. “This commitment to further reduce our emissions goes hand in hand with our ongoing client work, from designing and building high-performance buildings, to energy savings performance contracting, to climate change mitigation plans.”
AECOM will report progress toward its reduction targets, and the strategies employed will be reported in its annual enterprise sustainability report each year starting in 2016. Given the nature of AECOM’s business, the firm will report on GHG issues related to the energy consumed (conditioning, water and waste) in the spaces it occupies — in conjunction with its landlords — as well as in areas related to travel and other business activities.
