As part of Malaysia’s largest infrastructure project to date, AECOM is utilizing its innovative digital solutions to improve transportation links around Kuala Lumpur.

The Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit (KVMRT) project is a planned three-line mass rapid transit (MRT) system in Malaysia’s Klang Valley, an urban conurbation that includes the capital city of Kuala Lumpur and is considered the heart of the country’s industry and commerce.

The project is Malaysia’s largest public infrastructure development to date and a major milestone in the transformation of Kuala Lumpur’s transportation infrastructure.

 

An eco-friendly transport solution
The KVMRT system will strengthen the current rail transit network in the region, while also alleviating severe traffic congestion and ageing road systems in the Klang Valley metropolitan area.

By introducing a more environmentally sustainable means of transportation, the project is considered an eco-friendly solution to urban transport needs. It is also a key element of the national agenda to boost the public transport modal share to 40 percent by 2030.

 

Multidisciplinary expertise

The first phase of the project is the KVMRT Kajang Line, which was officially opened in July 2017. Totalling 31.7 miles (51 kilometers), Kajang Line is Malaysia’s first-ever MRT line and serves a total of 31 stations and more than 400,000 passengers per day.

The KVMRT Putrajaya line is the second phase of the project. This line consists of 52.2 kilometers (32 miles) of track, of which 13.5 kilometers (8 miles) are underground. A total of 37 stations, 11 of them underground.

AECOM worked with MMC Gamuda on both the Kajang and Putrajaya lines. For the Kajang Line, AECOM provides engineering design and detailed design for the Northern Elevated Section traversing 14 miles (22.5 kilometers) of elevated guideway works and 12 elevated stations, as well as 3.4 miles (5.5 kilometers) of underground works, including four underground stations.

For the Putrajaya Line, AECOM is appointed as the Lead Consultant for the Underground Works Package. Other than being the Lead Consultant, AECOM is also the Civil & Structural Engineering Detailed Design Consultant for 6 underground stations and MEP Detailed Design Consultant for the entire Underground Works Package. The Putrajaya Line is due to be fully operational by March 2023.

Thanks to the mobilization of our experienced team of multidisciplinary experts and resources from regional offices to support the local office, we were able to complete design delivery of the project within a compressed program .

 

Digital innovation

The project owner, MRT Corporation, has also drawn on our proven and award-winning Building Information Modeling (BIM) approach to utilize the latest advances in engineering technology throughout the project lifecycle.

BIM is a key digital engineering tool that boosts operational efficiency by using a shared digital representation of a built asset to facilitate design, construction and operational processes, which in turn leads to better decision making. In 2017, AECOM was recognized for its work on the SSP line, winning in the BIM Advancements in Rail and Transit category at Bentley’s Be Inspired Awards.

In addition, we have deployed our digital expertise and resources from both within Malaysia and internationally in the form of a single, integrated team, highlighting the value of collaborative workflow based around a common data environment.
