It’s a challenge trying to persuade young people that science is a cool career with impressive prospects. The industry has not always moved with society. The stereotypical images of sterile labs populated with scientists (mostly male) in white coats don’t help … and they haven’t changed for decades. Science needs some innovation … and a thorough makeover.
Fortunately, there are inspiring and totally brilliant designs which show the way we all need to go. Take the amazing Halley VI research station in Antarctica for example, as featured in Magnetic Attraction. Created by Hugh Broughton Architects, with AECOM as lead consultant providing multi-disciplinary engineering, this fantastic lab is not just providing the best possible accommodation for research into climate change, it also moves on skis to avoid getting trapped by snow and ice. And, on top of all this, it looks beautiful. Not surprising then, that it has won a shelf full of awards including the world’s best Architizer A+ Award, and the Best Education/Research category and Project of the Year in the ENR Global Best Projects Awards. It doesn’t get much better than that.
There is a handful of other great examples too, but of course there is a whole load more to be done. Read on for inspiration from our specialist team which has been working in all areas of the science and technology realm, from schools and universities to laboratories and research centres.
