AECOM Hunt served as design builder for the San Jose McEnery Convention Center expansion and renovation. This project entailed the demolition of a 1960s-era library to allow for a 127,500 SF expansion of the convention center, inclusive of 25,000 SF of meeting rooms, a 35,000 SF ballroom, kitchen and back-of-house support spaces, stacked above a combination of fixed and flexible meeting spaces.
The existing convention center was renovated to provide a cohesive look with the new expansion, with work including refreshed meeting rooms, multi-purpose rooms and new pre-function and exhibit hall finishes as well as new signage. All told, the project brought the total convention center space to 550,000 SF.
Nearly 2,000 tons of steel was used during construction. The new façades truly embrace the surrounding environment of downtown San Jose, maximizing natural elements and bringing daylight to the space, with over 13,500 SF of glazing. Openings in the glass walls allow the meeting room level to open to the terraced plaza, creating opportunities for indoor/outdoor meetings and light exhibits
