Being part of AECOM throughout my early career has increased my confidence massively. Speaking with clients regularly throughout projects to build relationships is something that I never expected to be involved in so early on in my career but it is extremely beneficial.

Joining AECOM was a natural choice after graduation as it aligned perfectly with my ambition to make a lasting impact on the world and improve the society I live in. As a global infrastructure firm with a strong commitment to “delivering a better world”, I knew I could contribute to meaningful projects that benefit society economically, socially, and environmentally.

Bristol
The work I do is helping the UK, and the globe, to reduce carbon emissions within the energy sector through identifying ways to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and to increase future climate resilience. I work with individual clients to find tailored and innovative solutions to reduce the environmental impact of heating and cooling our buildings and homes.

Salary infoHow we work
Our standard full time working hours are 40 per week Monday to Friday, or 37.5 hours per week in the Republic of Ireland. There will be occasions such as working on a large bid with a tight deadline where some extra hours may be required, but as a general rule you will not be expected to work evenings or weekends, this is your time to relax with your family and friends. There are some exceptions to this such as our ecology/fieldwork teams.
I utilize Freedom to Grow to work flexibly; predominantly, I work at home and adapt my days to suit me. Due to my Scout volunteering commitments, I often have at least one shorter working day a week and adjust my hours on other days to accommodate this. Freedom to Grow was particularly beneficial while completing my degree, as I could work around my coursework.

Giving back
You will have two paid Social Value days per year where you can do charity work or support your local community and we encourage all our early careers to become STEM Ambassadors.
We all leave a legacy. What will yours be?
Learn more about Sustainable LegaciesWe have 16 hours of social value time each year, which allows you to explore volunteering opportunities where you can give back to the community. I spent a day last year at a local primary school, clearing a garden area for a new picnic area for the children. We also got time to explore their mini farm, petting their pygmy goats and chickens!
Stakeholder Engagement
Leeds
I used one of my social values days to help build a bridge for a small community in Hunton, North Yorkshire. Funding was obtained via Richmondshire District Council and plant equipment and tools provided by colleagues and members of the community. We all had a great time helping provide the village with some desperately needed infrastructure! Since then, the locals have voiced their gratitude to the AECOM staff that helped build the bridge over the beck.
Rail
Leeds
I signed up to be a STEM ambassador through AECOM and have attended a career fair at a local high school and a couple of primary school events. Being able to pass on my excitement for the subject I studied at university and now work in is very rewarding and hopefully has inspired other young people to do the same.
