Supporting Kenya meet its climate goals through technical, financial, legal and monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) expertise
Helping the Government of Kenya achieve its nationally determined contributions (NDC), Global NDC Implementation Partners (GNIplus) – a collaboration between AECOM, Climate Policy Initiative, Pollination and Ricardo Energy and Environment – are supporting Kenya with a four-year climate change mitigation and adaptation program, funded by the German International Climate Initiative (IKI).
Combining the strengths of world-leading organizations – GNIplus is a consortium that provides governments with the best available technical, policy, financial, governance, legal and MRV expertise to support the reduction of carbon emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change.
In Kenya, we have been supporting the government meet its climate goals with a focus on the forestry and water sectors, as they are significantly underfunded when it comes to climate action investment. We have been working with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, and the National Treasury, as well as other relevant sectoral ministries and public and private stakeholders throughout the delivery from 2018 to 2022.
GNIplus is working ‘top-down’, supporting the development of the enabling environment for NDC implementation, as well as ‘bottom-up’ on project design and feasibility to prove viability of action.
AECOM has been delivering the technical aspects of the project and implementing three workstreams: firstly, providing an understanding of the forestry and water sectors in Kenya by creating two climate action status reports. Secondly, developing two sector roadmaps of projects that will help overcome potential barriers and support the implementation of the National Climate Change Action Plan (NCCAP) in Kenya. And thirdly, developing pilot projects, including a focus on payment of ecosystem services in the forestry sector and, in the water sector, carrying out a pre-feasibility study and tender documentation design of a climate change resilience and surface water monitoring programme.
