AECOM is serving as lead designer of Intuit Dome, future home of the LA Clippers. The iconic new arena and event venue is designed for optimal and intimate engagement of community and fans and will raise the bar for every major sports franchise in the world with regard to sustainability through design and fan experience.
The team set out to create a unique, high-performance design that’s representative of the character of the LA Clippers and city itself – powerful, exciting, and committed to the experience of place, purpose, and community. A standout feature of the visually dynamic and structurally efficient design is a steel frame with diagrid geometry, inspired by the elegant form of a basketball net as a ball passes through it. The unique building skin is formed from a series of diamond-shaped, interwoven metal panels with multiple uses that adapt over the different areas of the building.
Intuit Dome will embrace both enhanced environmental performance and fan experience, taking advantage of the Southern California climate through an indoor-outdoor approach that allows for a naturally ventilated entrance and upper concourse. A solar-optimized building shell will balance natural light and solar heat gain.
In addition to a new home for the LA Clippers, Intuit Dome will feature a multi-purpose plaza, complete with concert stage, community basketball courts, and space for the public to gather. It is scheduled to open for the 2024-25 National Basketball Association season and is adjacent to the recently completed SoFi Stadium, the Forum, and Hollywood Park.
The design team and Clippers are working aggressively toward initiatives that will earn Intuit Dome a LEED Platinum certification, the highest classification available. Intuit Dome will operate 100% carbon-free from day one. Intuit Dome will be naturally ventilated, fully electric through batteries and solar power with enough on-site energy storage to power a basketball game or concert, and have no net new greenhouse gas emissions. It will feature a comprehensive waste reduction program to eradicate landfill waste onsite and extensive programs to improve regional air quality. Intuit Dome has committed to the annual monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions and transportation impacts, a first for a large-scale venue, which will ensure sustainability goals and promises are met, and also provide the data to help drive broader community transformation to a low carbon future. Recently, the Clippers added a founding partner for Intuit Dome, Aspiration, which will embed sustainability services throughout the fan experience.
Along with AECOM, the core design team includes Anderson Barker Architects, Hood Design Studio, City Design Studio, Walter P. Moore, Henderson Engineering, and Labib Funk & Associates, among many others. A joint venture of AECOM Hunt and Turner Construction is serving as construction manager of the facility.
