In a joint venture, AECOM Hunt served as CM for the modernization of Southwest Airlines Fort Lauderdale Airport Terminal 1. The project scope encompassed a new five-gate concourse and renovation of the existing Terminal 1, including new landside facilities, TSA security check points, Federal Inspection Services space, expanded seating areas and new retail and concession spaces.
The scope of the new five-gate concourse included airfield paving, accommodation for fueling and other aircraft support facilities, as well as a connector linking the new gates to the existing Terminal 1. The two-story connector structure includes a passenger area, hold room seating, concessions and retail spaces and aviation offices.
The extensive expansion to the existing Terminal created a new gateway to the existing B and C concourses. This was accomplished by removing airline offices and building enclosures and installing a new structure, spanning 260 feet, into the existing terminal spaces, all while maintaining airline operations. Additionally, a four-story structure and exterior enclosure were constructed in the operating terminal. The expansion also provides new airline and aviation authority administration spaces, upgraded baggage handling equipment, vertical transportation and tenant space for concession and retail opportunities
