AECOM Hunt served as general contractor for the new 600-bed, 1,500,000-square-foot LAC + USC Medical Center in Los Angeles. The project consisted of four major components: a seven-story outpatient building; an eight-story inpatient tower; a five-story diagnostic and treatment building; and a 33,000-square-foot central energy plant. The distinct buildings are inter-connected at various levels and all were designed to withstand maximum credible seismic events.
The 334,000-square-foot outpatient building was designed with a concentric braced frame structural system and a state-of-the-art HVAC system. The primary exterior building enclosure is pre-cast concrete panels, a glazed curtain wall system with metal panels, and a built-up roof. The 681,000-square-foot, 600-bed inpatient tower’s exterior is precast concrete panels, metal panels, glazed curtain wall and a built-up roof. The 430,000-square-foot diagnostic and treatment building was designed with a seismic base-isolation system beneath its entire 76,650-square-foot base that can accommodate 22-inches of movement. The central plant work consisted of excavation, shoring, grading, and construction of a 53,871-square-foot single story, below grade, reinforced concrete structural steel building.
The medical center also includes an Automated Guided Vehicle system which moves throughout the medical center delivering supplies and pharmaceuticals. Each vehicle is programmed to move to its destination guided by radio beacons installed in the ceiling. Site preparation for this project included demolition of six existing buildings, utility relocations, and hazardous materials removal. Our team was also responsible for move transition and occupant relocations for the entire project.
