The project will keep the lights on for the eastern Melbourne metropolitan area by providing assurance of supply across several energy distributors.
In mid-2021, AECOM was awarded the Templestowe Terminal Station redevelopment project by AusNet Services, an energy delivery service business that owns and operates Victoria’s largest network of electricity and gas infrastructure.
Templestowe Terminal Station, located 16 km north-east of Melbourne’s CBD, is connected to the Eastern Metropolitan 220 kV network and is the transmission connection point for various distribution network service providers (DNSPs) – CitiPower, United Energy, Jemena, and AusNet.
The design phase for the project is due for completion at the end of 2022 and is one of the largest transmission design works undertaken by our Melbourne-based Transmission and Distribution team in the last 5 years.
Successful redevelopment at Templestowe Terminal Station will reduce supply, safety, and environmental risks.
Key to the project’s success is the reduction in electricity supply risks to the DNSPs as well as safety and environmental risks.
Services
The Templestowe Terminal Station redevelopment will see the installation of two new 220/66kV Transformers with fire walls and oil bund enclosures that are connected to the associated environmental system for oil containment. In addition, primary, civil, and structural design works will be conducted on both the 220kV and 66kV Air Insulated Switchyards. These works will involve assets replacement, earth grid upgrades, lightning assessment(s), site benching, cable trenches/conduit augmentation, drainage extensions, re-establishment of access roads, lighting assessment(s), acoustics studies, rack, and gantry extensions.
The protection equipment for both 220kV and 66kV networks at Templestowe Terminal Station have been progressively updated. For the secondary systems, works on both 220kV and 66kV protection and control schemes will be undertaken, including design of AC & DC schemes with batteries and chargers, RTU/SCADA with relevant communication systems, new/upgraded relay settings, and mapping.
The complexities of the Templestowe Terminal Station redevelopment require an experienced multi-disciplinary team to deliver this project. We have formed an integrated team of specialists from our Acoustic, Civil, Electrical, Environmental, Geotechnical and Structural engineering teams, with our ESG strategies underpinning all the work we deliver.
Achievements
The project is running on schedule and budget. We have successfully delivered an early works Synchronous Condenser package in December 2021 and have also completed the milestone COM1 on 1st February 2022. Detail design continues to progress well with several IFC packages earmarked for delivery in the latter half of 2022.
