The Klang Valley MRT (KVMRT) will form the backbone of the public transport system in Greater Kuala Lumpur (Klang Valley). This is the government’s largest public infrastructure project to date, and is expected to reduce traffic and improve livability in the region.

Boosting public transport use and reducing emissions

The Putrajaya Line is the second line to be completed under the KVMRT project. The first phase of the metro rail began operations on June 16, 2022, and the second and final phase was completed on March 16, 2023.

Together with the existing rail network, the line will help increase the targeted modal share of 40 percent public transport use within Greater Kuala Lumpur. The reduced number of vehicles on the road is also expected to alleviate traffic congestion and lower carbon emissions.

Stretching 57.7 kilometers, the Putrajaya Line has 36 operational stations, of which 27 are elevated and nine are underground. There are 10 interchange and connecting stations for easy transfer to existing and future rail lines. Five provisional stations have also been built along the alignment for future use.

Managing urban constraints with excellence in BIM

AECOM was the lead consultant for the 13.5-kilometer underground section of the metro. We also served as the civil and structural engineering detailed design consultant for six of the underground stations, as well as the mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) detailed design consultant for the entire underground works package. In addition, we provided cost management services for the delivery of elevated viaducts and stations throughout the project.

Our experience with Building Information Modeling (BIM), as well as our work on Kajang Line, the first KVMRT line, has enabled our team manage the constraints and challenges of building underground in a highly urbanized area. We tapped into our multidisciplinary team of professionals from across the region to provide engineering solutions to our client, MMC Gamuda KVMRT (T) Sdn Bhd, and project owner, MRT Corp.

As a result, MRT Corp became the first infrastructure developer in Asia to achieve BIM Level 2 accreditation, in accordance with British standards. Leveraging BIM allowed the team to create digital 3D models of the project to foresee and address potential problems and help reduce expenses from high repair costs in the future.
