News

TORONTO (November 7, 2023) — AECOM, the world’s trusted infrastructure consulting firm, today announced that it has been selected by the Malawi Millennium Development Trust (MMD), funded by the Millennium Challenge Corporation,to carry out the Resettlement and Livelihood Restoration Plans (RLRP) and implementation services in support of its Accelerated Growth Corridor Project. The project aims to improve land services and reduce transportation costs through road infrastructure upgrades in targeted rural areas. Under the five-year contract, AECOM’s focus will be on implementing the RLRP process and data collection to minimize risks and comply with national and international standards.

“In partnership with MMD, we look forward to addressing the high price of road freight transport services and access to land for investment,” said Frank Sweet, chief executive of AECOM’s global Environment business. “By leveraging best practices from our extensive transit and environmental experience, we are confident in our ability to deliver this vital work while improving the region’s built, natural, and social environments.”

AECOM’s project scope will focus on four separate corridors, for a total of 287 kilometers across Malawi. The Company’s role will oversee preparing, implementing, and monitoring the Resettlement and Livelihood Restoration Plan and establishing and carrying out the stakeholder strategy and engagement plan. In addition, it will design and operate a comprehensive information management system related to social census of affected households, including asset registration and valuation, compensation entitlements, and grievance mechanisms.

“This critical project will play a key role in supporting Malawi’s growing population and improving residents’ quality of life,” said Richard Barrett, chief executive of AECOM’s Canada region. “Our track record of delivering large scale infrastructure projects around the world, as well as our mobilized global resources and project management experts will help ensure the successful implementation of the RLRP plan.”

AECOM will also conduct social impact assessments, with a particular focus on mitigating issues towards livelihood restoration, potential risks, and impacts of vulnerable populations such as women, girls, and groups living below the poverty line. This project will be completed in compliance with Malawi’s legal framework and the International Finance Corporation Performance Standard 5 for Land Acquisition and Involuntary Resettlement.
