Kirk

Assistant Civil Engineer

Shanghai CN

What is your name and role at AECOM?

My name is Kirk and I am an Assistant Civil Engineer in AECOM’s PCM team in Shanghai CN.

How long have you worked for AECOM?

I have been working at AECOM full time one and a half year since I graduated.

Describe your role and day-to-day work?

Now my title is Assistant Civil Engineer in PCM department, so my daily work is all about site management. For site management I work mainly in two parts: the first one is document control, all the official documents issued to contractors, submitted by contractors and client relevant documents will be stored on ACC platform and client’s database. For document control, I need to follow AECOM’s standard and register all the documents I issue and receive in a log. The second main work is construction management. I would do construction materials inspection together with Jianli’s engineer before the materials come into using. In addition to the inspection of incoming construction materials, I also should do construction process acceptance together with colleagues from supervisory company. This acceptance is the key work before contractor could do next step construction.

Of course, this is only some of the main work, in addition to these tasks for the site EHS management is also the responsibility of every field engineer. Safety is no small matter, we need to manage the site with professional ability.

How has your work at AECOM contributed towards having a positive impact on the environment?

My work in the PCM department is mainly involved in part of the construction site management, so I am mainly involved in the form of management to achieve the requirements of the owner and our sustainable development.

The project I involved in is a relocation project of an industrial plant, during the pre-project stage, we carry out LCC analysis on related materials and equipment to meet the owner’s requirements for sustainable development; during the construction stage, the plant will use energy-saving and environmentally friendly building materials and carry out carbon dioxide emission statistics and energy consumption statistics on the machinery during the construction period. As a member of AECOM, I always practice the concept of sustainable development and environmental protection and do a good job in data collection and statistics and other related support work.

The original industrial building will be part of the CBD of the area and will be surrounded by environmentally friendly public facilities such as parks, and will make the neighbourhood a green community.

Are there any other interesting or unique opportunities you have had through your work at AECOM or interesting experiences with clients or building client relationships?

Also during this relocation project, I have a long period of time is to cooperate with the owner to carry out the preliminary work, in the work of our professional permitting engineer and I go to the government departments several times to carry out the preliminary engineering consultation, for the project registered, planning approval and other work. During this work period, I contact with different government departments and owner’s departments, which makes me feel the different company culture and work flow, and increases my experience to provide better service to the owner in the future.

How has AECOM helped you in your career development?

As we all know that AECOM is a Fortune 500 company which provides me with a broad platform and many opportunities. As one of the world’s top companies in the construction industry, AECOM’s mature system, platform, training methods, workflow, etc. makes it easy for me to get started with my work and make my career plan when I first join the company. There are many experienced engineers in the company, and in the process of working with them, I learn how to better communicate with owners, how to better manage contractors, how to maximise our value and other very practical skills. It can be said that I have reached a very high starting point through AECOM’s platform. AECOM’s rich global engineering experience expands my horizon and breaks the traditional perception of the engineering industry.

What do you like most about working for AECOM?

One of the things I like most about AECOM is the great working environment. There is no rivalry, fighting or other behaviour that can damage the relationship between colleagues, and everyone is working hard to bring the project to a safe and successful conclusion. The leaders are all very nice, as senior colleagues in the construction industry, they are very attentive to provide guidance to us young people who have just started to work and encourage us to explore and learn.

How do you use AECOM’s ‘Freedom to Grow’ to give you a good work/life balance?

The balance between life and work has always been an important part of the workplace, how to achieve this balance I believe that AECOM is in the forefront, AECOM not only encourages employees to participate in a variety of sports clubs after work, but also in each traditional holiday held before the holiday related activities. For example, I joined the company’s basketball club and we organise basketball games every Wednesday.

What’s your proudest moment at AECOM?

For me getting the praise from owners or other contractors is the proudest thing I can do. I can say that the praise of the owner is a high recognition of our work, and as a young man who has just started job career , it is a great sense of achievement.
